  In simple words,a computer is an     electronic device which processes information based upon the instructions, provided and generates the desired output.

In other words, the term computer is used to describe is used to describe a device made up of a combination of electronic and electromechanical components. A computer has no intelligence and is referred to as hardware .

A computer system is a combination of five elements:

1.      Hardware
2.      Software
3.      People
4.      Procedures
5.      Data/Information

 CHARACTERISTICS OF COMPUTER  

Increasing popularity of computer has proved that it is very powerful and Useful tool. The power and usefulness of this popular tools are mainly due to following characteristics.

                 (1) Automatic::- 

An automatic machine words by itself without human intervention. Computer are automatic machines because once started on a job, they carry out the job until it is finished.

                  (2) Speed ::-

A computer is a very fast device. It can perform in a few seconds, the amount of work that a human being can do in an entire year if  he /she worked day and night and did nothing else. Speed of computer is measured in terms of milliseconds, microseconds, nanosecond or picoseconds .

                 (3) Accuracy::-

In addition to being very fast , computer are very accurate. Accuracy of a computer is consistently high and the degree of its accuracy depends upon its design. A computer perform every calculations with the same accuracy .

                 (4) Diligence::-

Unlike human beings ,a computer is free from monotony, tiredness and lack of concentration . It can continuously work for hours without creating any error & without grumbling. If ten million calculation have to be performed, a computer will perform the last one with exactly the same accuracy and speed as the first one .

                 (5) Versatility::-

It is one of the most wonderful things about a computer. A computer is capable of performing almost any task ,it the task can be reduced to a finite series of logical steps . One moment it is preparing the results of examination, nest moment it is busy preparing electricity bills and in between, it may be helping on office secretary to trace an important letter in second.

                (6) Power of Remembering. 

As a human being  acquires new knowledge, his/her brain subsconsciously selects what it feels to be important and worth retaining in memory. The brain relegates unimportant details to back of mins or just forget them  .

                  (7) No feelings ::-

Computer are devoid of emotions. They have no feeling and no instincts because they are machine. Based on our feelings, taste, knowledge and experience we often make certain judgement in out day to day life whereas, computer can't make such judgement on their own . They make judgement based on the instructions give to them in the form of program that are written by us ( human being).

                  (8) Flexibility::-

A computer is a versatile machine and its use is limited only by our imagination. In today's fast developing technology word it world it would be very difficult ,in some cause, inconceivable, to find an area where computers are not being used to a great advantage.
