              WHAT IS  DISKETTE

The manufacture of a floppy diskette has no idea whether you intend using it on an IBM Pc, a DELL ,a specturm ,or an apple Macintosh computer . The read -write  techniques in all above mentioned computer differ ,so the manufacture does not prepare the disk before use. Before an operating system computers ,so the manufacture does not  prepare the disk before  use. Before an operating system computers differ,so the manufacture does not prepare the disk before use. Before an operating system can store file on a new diskette, it must prepare the diskette for use. This initialization of the disk is  known as formatting.

A diskette consist of two parts::-a thin circular plastic coated with magnetic material, and a protective plastic jacket or hard shell.

The jacket is a cover that protects the disk  from dust. The spring-loaded that normally covers the opening in a 3.5 inch diskette is moved aside to provide access to the magnetic coating. The hole in the center of the  disk goes around the drive motor ,which spins the disk so that data can be written (recorded) or read.

(1) HARD DISK: Hard disk or fixed disk is also used to store program and the data. Working with a hard disk is identical to working with a floppy diskette, except that you reference a hard disk as  C and the  hard disk can store considerably more number of files .

Accessing data is a faster in a hard disk than in a floppy disk. Unlike the plastic storage media used by floppy and micro floppy disk,a hard disk has a solid metal media, which allows the recording mechanism to be a more precise.

A hard disk can contain several platters.the multiple platters provide increased space,so the hard disk can store much more information than a floppy disk.

(2)DISK STORAGE: The max. Disk capacity depends on the type of the disk.standared.25 inches double sided double density disk. E.g, provide space for 360kB or 5.25 quad density disk stores upto 1.2 MB. 3.5inches disk can store either 720 kB or 1.44 MB depending on the disk type .

To understand how disks store information, you need to know how DOS stores information on your disk. The disk contain number of concentric circular ring similar to the groove in the gramophone record.
